Thanking activity ;- To The Light House

1.  How can you explain that 'what' Virginia Woolf wanted to say (for example, the complexity of human relationship, the everyday battles that people are at in their relationship with near and dear ones, the struggle of a female artist against the values of middle/upper class society etc) can only be said in the way she has said?

Ans.  Virginia Woolf''s very well used stream of consciousness in the novel " To The Lighthouse". By using this technique, she puts her idea about human relationship and explains that how our relationship are so complicated. Mrs. Ramsay is the central character in the novel and bridge between children and their father. Mr. Ramsay and his family go out to lighthouse that time all lighthouse member play cricket and Mr. and Mrs. Ramsay enjoyed this moment.

2.  Do you agree: "The novel is both the tribute and critique of Mrs. Ramsay"?

Ans. Yes we can say that the novel is a tribute and critique because Lighthouse symbolized Mrs. Ramsay's characters as perfect  typical Indian women. Mrs. Ramsay do everything for her family and that's why she alive in everyone's mind after her death. Mrs Ramsay is also known as ' angel of house '.  Our society always want ideal women like Mrs. Ramsay. The concept of ' Ideal Women ' is very old but its very popular nowadays for example this TV serial based on idea of ideal women.

3.    Considering symbolically, does the Lighthouse stand for Mrs. Ramsay or the narrator (Virginia Woolf herself who is categorically represented by Lily)?

Ans.   As per my point of view lighthouse is used as symbol for Mrs. Ramsay in the novel. she stand alone like lighthouse and keeps united to family. She works like the lighthouse. She tries to give way or guidance to the people who are needed. But there is a kind of satire because it is for those who lost their path not for those who are not lost and who have their own light. she is became bridge of relationship between children and their father its good but some way its very harmful and in the novel we can see that without her relationship between father and children are broken.

4.   In the article by Joseph Blotner, two myths are patterned together. Name the myths? How they are zeroed down to the symbols of 'Window' and 'Lighthouse'? How does the male phallic symbol represent feminine Mrs. Ramsay?

Ans.  There were two myths Oedipus myth and Pagan myth. As window works as bring new air in our house. We can interpret it as window brings freshness in our mind. Lighthouse shows the way to the people and it helps to take the right decision. So as compare to society it stands positive thing. 'To The Lighthouse' is based on Greek myth. In this novel  Virginia Woolf use various myth. Joseph blotner has also use the famous myth like the pagan myth or Oedipus myth. The myth of kronos and Rhea is relation between father and mother. Kronos has eating children. But they are so innocent. Here, Rhea is represented as a mother.  The myth of Homeric Hymns it is the praise of divinity or God. In this reference we find that how metaphor became reality.

5.   What do you understand by the German term 'Künstlerroman? How can you justify that 'To The Lighthouse' is 'Künstlerroman' novel?

Ans.       'Kunstlerroman' is the German word. Meaning of ' kunstlerroman' is artist's novel.  Normally, these type of novels shows artist’s growth to maturity,   which is deals with the problems of any types of artists like, painter, mucisian, dancer and poet. In the novel, in which the protagonist of the novel is an artist or we can say that in the novel any type of artist is protagonist. Yes, the novel 'To the Lighthouse' is the 'kunstlerroman' novel because in this novel we find that lily as an artist and who struggle towards preatriyarcal society and also broke the statement of Charles Tansley, women can not paint and write.

6.    "... the wages of obedience is death, and the daughter that reproduces mothering to perfection, including child-bearing, already has on her cheeks the pallor of death. One reminded here of various texts by Lucy Irigaray, in which she attacks mothers for being, however unwillingly, accomplices in the patriarchal system of oppression." (Viola). In light of this remark, explain briefly Lily's dilemma in 'To The Lighthouse'.

Ans.   In To the Lighthouse, Mrs. Ramsay’s daughters are represented s sporting with infidel ideas; there is also mute question in their mind about difference and chivalry, they are also credited with “Manliness in their girlish hearts.” Mrs. Ramsay’s three daughters are mentioned namely Nancy, Rose and Prue. But two of them of them, Nancy ands Rose are to speak non-existence but Prue, dies from too complete an obedience to her mother’s wishes. Others are Lily and Cam. Lily is adopted child. Here Lily symbolizes her fight against patriarchy and its ministering figure of the Angel in the House, with the death of the mother; it was to be fought against her image. Lily passes from her state of numbness to an unexpected expression of anger towards Mrs. Ramsay for emptiness which she has created by her death and it creates dilemma.

7.  You have compared the 'beginning' and the 'ending' of the novel and the film adaptation of the novel directed by Colin Gregg (you can see it again in the embedded video below this). Do you think that the novel is more poignant than the movie? If yes, do you ascribe the fact that the power of words is much greater than that of the screen / visuals?

Ans.  Yes, we can say that the novel is more poignant than the movie. In the film, camera allow to speak, there is no use of word, camera help to discribe the scene, there is no need to speak , word, less need of word, reading novel is more effective than the screen or visuals. In visuals we can not feel the scenw or any situation, it suddenly pass, but during reading of the novel we feed more and more the situation and we also imagine it. so reading book is more effective.

8. How do you interpret the last line of the novel ?

Ans. My interpretation about the last line of the novel is that Woolf's get her vision with the character of lily and also prove women ability by the character of lily.

9.   What does the catalogue named as 'Army and Navy' signifyWhat does cutting of 'Refrigerator'  signify?

Ans.  The catalogue named 'Army and Navy' and cutting of 'Refrigerator' both have signify different meanin. The catalouge in the novel does not have a date, but ot does have a name. The war and consumption are connected or linked witb this catalogue named as 'Army and Navy'.
One meaning of cuting refrigerator is it is a tool for conserving and as such a symbol of preservation. Another meaning, refrigerator symbol of change of human culture. The refrigerator is an insrument of sceince and it symbolise preservation and shaper of culture.

10.  .Why did Virginia give such prominence to the tale of the “Fisherman’s Wife”? In particular, why did she weave such a misogynist tale into the fabric of a book which so eloquently challenges received patriarchal notions about the roles and capabilities of women?

Ans.  In this novel we can find the representation of fairy tale told by Mrs. Ramsay to her children which shows barrenness and unreasonable demand from the husband which also depicts that how Mrs.Ramsay had to bent infront the bad mood of her husband because a woman should not speak or quarrel with anybody especially with her husband otherwise she would be known as an uncultured woman.  Mrs. Ramsay always  pamper the ego of her husband,. So it shows suppressed desires of woman like Mrs. Ramsay.

11. .How is India represented in 'To The Lighthouse'?
Ans.        India is represented in novel as

  •         Use of myth and concept of ideal women
  •         Man is on power position in the family
  •         Character of mrs ramsay as ideal mother, housewife
  • Show image of ‘patriarchal society.

Thank You.....
